Tip

You can change the hotkey in Settings. The Mac default is Fn — Apple reserves that key on recent keyboards for exactly this purpose.

Four steps to a working setup

  1. Open the installer and drag Skald to Applications (Mac), run the setup (Win), or launch the AppImage / install via AUR (Linux).

Skald runs as a menu-bar app on macOS, a tray app on Windows, and an AppIndicator on Linux.

  2. Grant permissions on first launch.

Microphone, Accessibility, Input Monitoring (macOS) — microphone + tray permissions (Windows) — microphone + xdg-portal hotkey (Linux). Skald walks you through each pane.

  3. Pair the device via browser login.

Skald opens a browser tab to heyskald.com. Log in once; the machine remembers itself — from that point your device is permanently paired with your account.

  4. Hold Fn (Mac) or your chosen key (Win), speak, release.

Text appears where your cursor is. In any application.
